The PETT Toilet is one cool little portable camping toilet, and environmentally friendly!
The “PETT”, is Phillips Environmental Products compact dry toilet system. Their motto is “to leave only your footprints behind”, and to do so in the most sanitary method possible for transporting and disposing of both liquid and solid human waste through innovative biodegradable technologies.
The PETT toilet is a collapsible toilet that is about the same size as a standard toilet (standing 14” off the floor) but folds up to a portable briefcase size (5” x 19” x 14”) and weighs only 7 pounds. It makes use of a 3 leg design for maximum stability on uneven ground. Compact and lightweight - very transportable.
Innovative PETT “Wag Bags” are used with the PETT portable environmental toilet (3 are included) that easily fit over or under the seat for maximum sanitation and hygiene. The special bags “gel” waste (turn liquids to solids), neutralize odors, speed the decaying process, are biodegradable, and approved for disposal in any trash can.
When Phillips was asked how much weight the PETT Toilet would hold, their response was this:
“We have driven a truck up where the front end was supported by two PETT toilets; one under each front wheel. While this is not a true scientific weight bearing test, it does demonstrate the durability of supporting a significant amount of weight.”
PETT Toilet – What Others Are Saying
"The PETT Toilet is stable and hygienic. This innovative, eco-friendly camping toilet has full-size features but folds to an easy-to-carry briefcase size for travel" – REI
"Finally, a portable (7lbs) engineered portable camping toilet system that is eco-friendly, convenient and sanitary) - River Magazine
"In all my TV adventures, The PETT toilet is the most clever and easy to use, ecologically-sound outdoor toilet I've ever sat on!" - S. Murphy, "the Eco Trekker"

Does The Job

I got a chuckle seeing the "video review" choice for this product. Somehow, I don't think it would be a good idea. lol
This thing works fine. Takes a couple seconds to set up. The legs are a little hard to get "unlocked" at first, because the entire thing is molded plastic. When set up, the lid looks like it will stay put like a seat back, but that isn't the case. I wouldn't bother trying to use it as pictured. It just falls off, because it fits into slots that don't lock down.
It's pretty easy to set up the Wag Bag inside of the netting. You'll have to make sure that you spread out the baggy to provide a big enough target.
The Wag Bag kit comes with toilet paper and an antiseptic wet nap. There's a powder inside the bag, so you have to open it up slowly when getting ready to "install" it in the netting. I would recommend having your own TP, as the stuff that's provided isn't that great. Baby wipes are good to have on hand.
When done with your business, the bag has enough extra plastic to fold over the top and avoid touching anything. It pushes easily into the zip-loc style pouch, and then you can stuff the wet naps in and zip it closed. Easy to dispose of in any trash can, too.
I'm about 250 lbs., and this thing supports my weight with no problems. It doesn't feel shaky at all. It's a little shorter than a normal toilet, but it's not a problem.
As for storage, it doesn't take up much space at all. It's light, and has a carrying handle. |
Great alternative to an outhouse!

| We have been using our PETT toilet for about a year. It's terrific to tote along on camping trips to places that either have no facilities or smelly outhouses. We like that the WAG bags are biodegradable, too - it's good to know they won't be sitting in some landfill 50 years from now. |
Perfect alternative to buggy, smelly latrines

| Ladies can camp in comfort - I love this product! Not that I couldn't if-absolutely-necessary use a smelly latrine, but this makes tent camping much more enjoyable for me. When you are used to your bathroom being an escape at home, this PETT in your own tent continues that feeling, instead of a buggy, smelly, ordeal. |
Best alternative ever to a porta-potty (or a bush!)

I have had my Pett for 5+ years now, and I wouldn't part with it. I keep it set up in the dressing/tack room of my horse trailer and it's wonderful for when we go out hunting (beats the heck out of crouching behind a cactus on a chilly morning). I have also used it at horse shows - when we're there for several days, I often set it up in the horse compartment just because there's more room. It's *SO* much nicer than a porta-potty, especially several days into the show.
Not long after I received it as a Christmas present, I bought a 100-pack of the WAG bags, so the cost was quite a bit less than buying the bags a few at a time. I did discover that you shouldn't leave the bags in the trailer during a Phoenix summer, because the packaging and the zip-lock container bag both tend to degrade and shred. The bag containing the powder is fine, though, so I just either tie the neck of that bag shut or use a gallon-sized food storage zip-lock bag.
It is, as someone pointed out, a big difficult to re-fold if you want to put it away, but as I just leave mine set up all the time, that's not a problem for me.
If it should ever break, I will certainly be buying another one. |
Not QUITE as advertised

| This is an excellent product. Strong and sturdy, I have no fears of it collapsing under my weight. It is, however, not quite as tall as a conventional toilet, which is one of its advertising points. It's 2 inches shorter than the toilet in my home. That doesn't sound like a MAJOR deal, but for those of us with bad backs and knees, it's sometimes an issue. Otherwise...it's a winner. |
Convenient for Camping

| This has been one of the best purchases for tent camping. We boat to an island and don't always have access to a camp ground. I highly recommend this product. I bought one for a friend for Christmas, as well. |
Cheap product

| Very, very unhappy with this product. One of the three legs never did colapse easily. I had to use a screwdriver to pry it out of it's locking position. Finally all three legs were giving me trouble. On the last camping trip I threw it in the trash. Very bad investment and little to no quality check. |
